Maytag is a trusted name in the home appliance industry. Their machines are reliable and long-lasting. That being said, every washing machine suffers a breakdown eventually. One of the most annoying errors is when your washer stops spinning.

When your washer doesn’t spin, your laundry remains sopping wet and needs to be wrung out manually or rewashed. Fortunately, there are several ways to fix a Maytag washer that isn’t spinning. Let’s take a look at some common causes of this issue and what you can do to fix them.

Check the settings

First, ensure that the cycle settings on your washer are correct. Your Maytag washer has numerous settings to accommodate various types of laundry loads. Some of them skip the spin cycle, as it can be damaging to certain delicate materials or garments.

If your washer isn’t spinning, it might simply be because the spin setting is turned off. Locate the control panel and make sure the spin cycle is activated. If it’s off, simply turn it on and rerun the cycle. This straightforward check could potentially solve the issue without any further action required.

Check for error codes

Check the digital display on the machine to see if it is showing an error code. These codes can help you identify and resolve the cause of the problem.

Consult your Maytag washer’s manual to understand the different error codes and their corresponding solutions. If you are still unable to determine the issue, it’s best to call a certified repair technician for assistance.

Understand the “add garment” feature

The “add garment” feature is a convenient option provided by Maytag washers, allowing you to add forgotten pieces of laundry to the machine even after the cycle has started. This feature works by pausing the cycle whenever you open the door, enabling you to add any additional items. However, using this feature late in the cycle can have repercussions.

If you add garments while the washer is in the middle of its rinse or spin cycles, it can disrupt the balance of the load. This imbalance can cause the washer to stop spinning properly, as it’s designed to prevent damage from uneven loads.

It’s advisable to use the “add garment” feature early in the washing cycle to ensure seamless operation. Save that last-minute addition for the next load of laundry.

Balance the load

If your Maytag washer is not spinning, it may be due to an unbalanced load. An unbalanced laundry load can cause the machine to shake and move excessively during the spin cycle, which can result in the machine failing to spin.

To avoid this issue, distribute the laundry evenly in the tub before starting the cycle. You should avoid overloading the washer, which can also lead to an unbalanced load.

Make sure to take care when washing a large load of heavy items such as jeans. It’s best to evenly distribute these items around the tub to prevent an imbalance.

Bulky or flowing items, such as bedsheets or beach towels, can wrap themselves around the main column of the washer, interfering with its ability to spin. Load these items carefully around the washer, or use a mesh laundry bag to keep twisty items from getting tangled.

Balance the washer

Another important factor to consider is the physical balance of the washer itself. An off-balance washer can hamper the spin cycle and lead to inefficient washing or a lot of unbalanced loads. This is because the washer’s design is based on it being level.

If the washer is tilted or uneven, it can cause the drum to spin off-axis. This dislodged spinning creates extra friction and strain on the motor and leads to much more damage down the line. It’s essential to be sure the washer is balanced and properly leveled during installation and use.

Make regular checks, especially after moving the appliance. Adjustments can usually be made to the feet of the washer to correct any imbalances. Use a spirit level to ensure the washer is truly level.

Check the lid switch

The lid switch is a safety feature built into most washing machines, including Maytag, to prevent the machine from spinning when the lid is open. If your Maytag washer is not spinning, one of the first things you should check is the lid switch.

Open the washer lid and take a look at the lid switch to make sure it is functioning properly. Ensure that nothing is blocking it and that the door actually latches when the cycle starts.

Inspect the drive belt

Another possible cause of a Maytag washer not spinning is a worn-out or damaged drive belt. The drive belt of the washer is the part that spins the drum during the wash cycle. If the drive belt is worn out or damaged, it can prevent the drum from spinning.

To check the belt, unplug the machine from its power source and tilt or lay it down on its side. Use caution when moving the washer, and get another person to help you if necessary.

The belt can be found on the bottom of the washer. You can access it by removing the screws holding the safety cover in place.

Inspect the washer’s drive belt for any signs of cracks, fraying, or looseness. If you see any of these, replace the belt.

When installing the new belt, make sure it is flat, and there are no kinks or twists. Give the drive and motor pullers a few test spins to ensure the belt moves smoothly.

Replace the cover. Get the washer back upright and in position. Plug it in and run a quick test spin cycle.

Wrap-up

Dealing with a Maytag washer that isn’t spinning can be frustrating and time consuming, but following these easy tips can help you resolve the issue quickly and efficiently. Be sure to check the lid switch, drive belt, and balance of the machine.

Also avoid overloading or using the “add garment” feature mid-cycle if available. With these simple troubleshooting steps, you’ll have your washing machine back up and running in no time.
