How to Clean a Front Load Washer

Front loading washing machines have many great features.  They use less water and detergent than top loading machines and they can handle the big laundry loads typically found in large households.  As with any other appliance, front-loading washers have at least one less than desirable quality, with the main one being their tendency over time to emit a mildew-like or moldy smell.  Closing the washer door after performing laundry chores traps moisture inside, contributing to mildew and mold growth on the rubber seal inside the door.

Cleaning Tips

Of course, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so it is best to get into the habit of regularly cleaning your washer before any smells gain traction.  There are products on the market specifically designed to clean front loading washers, but you can also clean it yourself with products you probably already have in your cupboard.

Once a month, pour 2 cups of distilled vinegar into the detergent dispenser and run the (empty) machine on the normal cycle, using hot water.  When finished, take a clean rag and using a 50/50 mixture of distilled vinegar and hot water, wipe down the inner door and tub, the rubber boot seal and the detergent dispenser.  Take another clean rag and wipe down the same components with hot water only, to remove any vinegar residue.  Run your washer again, with hot water only and then leave the door open for a few hours to allow it to air dry.
