Appliance Recalls

Fire Hazard: Whirlpool Recalls over 15,000 Microwaves

Big companies are not strangers to recall issues. Despite the best efforts to test and fail proof appliances and units for the safety of the users, the real test comes after hundreds or even thousands of units are sold and tested at home.
Fire hazards and a few reported incidents, including a home fire, prompted the fast recall of over 15,000 microwave hood combinations from Whirlpool. The retail price of the microwaves sold was around $400.
The possible ignition of an internal plastic component due to internal arcing resulted in the recall dated August 25, 2016, with the instruction of immediately stopping the use of the appliance and the unplugging of the unit.
Customers with one of the recalled models are required to contact the company to obtain a free replacement. In the meantime, the user should not attempt to use the microwave and it should remain unplugged.
This is the second time in a period of around 1 year that Whirlpool had to recall an appliance due to burn hazards. On July 29, 2015, the company had to issue the recall of around 40,000 ovens to fix an extendable rack after the report of 8 incidents. The ovens sold for $2,500 and up to $5,000.
Both recalls resulted in significant losses, and no doubt the company is working hard to fix the issues and avoid them completely in the future.
