The possible ignition of an internal plastic component due to internal arcing resulted in the recall dated August 25, 2016, with the instruction of immediately stopping the use of the appliance and the unplugging of the unit.
Customers with one of the recalled models are required to contact the company to obtain a free replacement. In the meantime, the user should not attempt to use the microwave and it should remain unplugged.
This is the second time in a period of around 1 year that Whirlpool had to recall an appliance due to burn hazards. On July 29, 2015, the company had to issue the
recall of around 40,000 ovens to fix an extendable rack after the report of 8 incidents. The ovens sold for $2,500 and up to $5,000.
Both recalls resulted in significant losses, and no doubt the company is working hard to fix the issues and avoid them completely in the future.
