What is That Smell? Tips on Cleaning Your Front Load Washer

Front load washing machines are all the rage, but after a few months of owning one, you will likely be asking, “What is that smell?” While the energy efficiency, water efficiency, loading capacity, and reduced use of detergent are great perks, the machine design allows for smelly mildew to accumulate in the rubber seal located inside the door. However, with just a little bit of effort, you can prevent this from happening.

Tips for prevention:

  • Keep the door open when the washing machine is not in use. This will allow moisture to evaporate and will prevent the mildew smell.
  • Clean your front load washing machine every four to six weeks.

Cleaning the machine:

Two products are effective in cleaning the front load washer – bleach or vinegar. Both will work, so the choice is really more about personal preferences and chemical concerns.  In a spray bottle, create a 50/50 mixture of either bleach and water or vinegar and water. Spray the mixture in the drum, on the rubber seal, on the door, and in the dispenser.  Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes, and then use a damp towel to wipe the mixture off.  If it has been a while (or never?) since you have cleaned it, you will likely have a black build up under the rubber seal. You will want to use a rag or sturdy paper towels to remove this build up, and it can be pretty stinky. Once you have wiped everything down, run the empty washing machine on hot. This will remove any remaining vinegar or bleach. As always, leave the door open when you are finished to reduce the need for future cleanings.
